City Mews, City Road, Cambridge

Development of 2 mews-style new houses & 3 fully refurbished houses on a Victorian terrace

Completed Spring 2015
Build cost circa £1 million

The client was Beechwood Estates, a private development company and a repeat client for us.

This was an ambitious project for both developer and builder due to significant ingress and egress issues to the works area and a complex demolition strategy, followed by a challenging build process.

Work on the refurbishment of the Victorian terrace and on the two new-builds took place in tandem and to a tight timescale.

Rerfurbishment – as opposed to new-build – requires a different skill set on site and a different approach in considering the deployment of trades.

While not Listed, there were materials of historical value to be considered and accommodated during the demolition of the old studio-workshops.  Many of these materails were renovated and utilised in the new construction.

The two brand new houses behind the terrace gave the mews a modern twist.

They had balconies and were partially steel framed with angular, pitched, slate roofs.  Solid oak staircases and glass balustrades were an internal feature which complemented the high specification of all the homes – new and refurbished – at City Mews.

The vision of the developer to recreate an historical built form into new homes gave us challenges but enormous satisfaction in constructing a truly unique scheme of which we are very proud.

Testimonial

“Dean & Dean had worked for us before the City Mews development. They are straightforward, efficient and deliver high quality work. They have a sound reputation in the construction industry in Cambridge and a strong track record of working on very restricted city centre sites.

“They bring an understanding of the developer’s investment in any site and expectation of the final project, as well as being able to consider the eventual homeowner’s view too.”

James Arnold, Managing Director, Beechwood Estates
